Application

N,N-dimethylethylenediamine is an important fine chemical product. As an important pharmaceutical intermediate, it can be used to synthesize the antitumor drug thioxanthenone, carbamoyl rotenone, the antiarrhythmic drug procainemide, the local anesthetic dibucain, the antihistamine neo-hetranine, the anticholinesterase drug ambenonium chloride (i.e., ambenonium), cefazolin sodium (Cefazolin No. 5), etc. In agriculture, it is used to synthesize flower inducers. It is also used in the Sabamine series of auxiliaries (such as color fixing agents, wetting agents, fiber softeners and the antistatic agent Sabamine BCH), reactive cationic dye intermediates, ion exchange resins and epoxy resin curing agents, etc.

Synthetic Route

Using ethanolamine as the starting material, the reaction is carried out by introducing hydrogen chloride gas in an ethanol medium, and the yield of ethanolamine hydrochloride is 52%; the obtained product is further reacted with thionyl chloride to obtain chloroethylamine hydrochloride with a yield of 71.4%; the obtained product is then reacted with dimethylamine, and the target product is obtained with a yield of 75% after post-treatment, and the total yield based on ethanolamine is 27.8%.
