Glucosamine Sulfate (CAS 14999-43-0) is an amino monosaccharide with the molecular formula C6H15NO9S and a molecular weight of 277.24 g/mol. Chemically, Glucosamine Sulfate is a sulfate salt of D-glucosamine, consisting of two glucosamine molecules per sulfate group. Glucosamine Sulfate serves as a critical rate-limiting precursor in the biochemical synthesis of glycosylated proteins and lipids.
Glucosamine Sulfate is an amino monosaccharide that serves as a critical rate-limiting precursor in the biochemical synthesis of glycosylated proteins and lipids. Glucosamine Sulfate is the only glucosamine form with long-term clinical evidence of structure-modifying effects in knee osteoarthritis. As a pharmaceutical ingredient, Glucosamine Sulfate is used in the treatment of arthritis and as an excipient in antibiotic formulations. Glucosamine Sulfate is also a key component in the manufacture of contact lenses and bifidobacteria culture media. In quality control contexts, Glucosamine Sulfate reference standards are used for analytical method development and pharmaceutical testing. The sulfate salt form of Glucosamine Sulfate provides the clinically preferred form for osteoarthritis treatment.

Test Method
(1)Dissolution: Dissolve D-glucosamine sulfate in a solvent at 0°C; the solvent is a saturated ammonium sulfate solution or dimethyl sulfoxide; the weight-to-volume ratio of D-glucosamine sulfate to solvent is 100 mg: 1 ml; filter the solution to obtain a solid;
(2) Detection: The obtained solid is tested for chloride ions and sulfate ions using the detection methods for potassium chloride (or sodium chloride) and potassium sulfate (or sodium sulfate). Both the detection methods for chloride ions and sulfate ions comply with Appendix VIII A of the 2010 edition of the China Pharmacopoeia regarding the chloride test method, and Appendix VIII B regarding the sulfate test method.
(3)Conclusion: Based on the results of the aforementioned tests for chloride ions and sulfate ions, D-glucosamine sulfate prepared by different methods can be distinguished;
In a saturated ammonium sulfate solution, the completely dissolved species are either D-glucosamine potassium sulfate chloride or D-glucosamine sodium sulfate chloride; if insoluble substances containing potassium sulfate are present, the original substance is a mixture of D-glucosamine hydrochloride and potassium sulfate; if insoluble substances containing sodium sulfate are present, the original substance is a mixture of D-glucosamine hydrochloride and sodium sulfate. When dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide, if the insoluble substance is potassium chloride, the original substance is D-glucosamine potassium sulfate chloride; if the insoluble substance is sodium chloride, the original substance is D-glucosamine sodium sulfate chloride; if the insoluble substance is potassium sulfate, the original substance is a mixture of D-glucosamine hydrochloride and potassium sulfate; if the insoluble substance is sodium sulfate, the original substance is a mixture of D-glucosamine sodium hydrochloride and sodium sulfate.
Application
D-glucosamine sulfate is a white crystalline powder, odorless with a slight salty taste. It is highly soluble in water, slightly soluble in methanol, and insoluble in organic solvents such as ethanol. It is used as a pharmaceutical raw material.
